Doing Qualitative Research on Religion in the Philippines
ISA in partnership with Center for Empirical Studies in Spirituality, Theology and Religion-Asia (CESSTREL-Asia) organized a seminar-workshop (webinar via zoom) on “Doing Qualitative Research on Religion in the Philippines” with Dr. Jayeel Cornelio as resource facilitator. Dr. Cornelio is an associate professor/director of Development Studies Program of the Ateneo de Manila University.
During the workshop, Dr. Cornelio introduced the different concepts, principles, and methods relevant to conducting qualitative research to understand the religious life of people. Through activities during the workshop, the participants learned and applied different skills and concepts in formulating research questions, designed a sampling strategy, and prepared relevant tools. At the end of the seminar- workshop, the participants were able to come up with a research design relevant to the needs of their respective communities. Throughout the workshop, the resource speaker draw on his extensive work on young people’s religious identity, new trends about the prosperity gospel, the tensions between faith and sexuality, and the religious justifications for the popular support for the war on drugs.
